I’m Shanie Allen, a creative working from the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.
I’d always been interested in Interior Design and when it came to choosing careers at 18, I decided to study Graphic Design. A decade later working in design for homeware and DIY brands, and the opportunity to work for myself came about specialising in Brand & Web Design. I felt that enrolling in IDI’s Interior Design course would help me focus on something new and creative when I might have “quiet times” in business. I had some experience working with commercial signage and I felt that the course would help me extend my design knowledge to provide interior fit outs to my existing clients.
My parents always bring up how often I shuffled my room around from about the age of 8. It’s been a passion since.
I also worked as a design team manager for Dulux and Beacon Lighting so my career has naturally evolved into the interiors space, while learning about products at the same time.
A typical day working for myself as a multidisciplinary creative involves a schedule I try as best as possible to map out at the start of the week. Walking the dog followed by checking emails, scheduling client calls and then focus work mode helps me stick to a routine. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of skipping lunch and working late when no one is there to tell you to take your breaks or leave the office.
When it comes to my commercial projects, my mission is to serve the client, which stems from my career in graphic design. Similar to a branding project, when I’m working on a fit out, I’m guided by the clients responses in meetings and questionnaires to ensure that their needs are met first and foremost.
The beauty of this approach is that I open myself up to more opportunities that explore many styles, rather than niching down. There is no benefit for a client project to look the same as the next when it comes to their space and branding. The spaces I create are aimed to be experienced.
I spend way too much time on Pinterest, but I also like to follow artists, product designers, and event designers that focus on activations and pop-ups, even hotels and Air BnB’s from all around the world, to explore elements of spaces. Inspiration can be found anywhere.
Not particularly. I really try to be guided by the client’s brand, needs and space rather than focusing on a particular style or products that I would choose for myself.
Authentic, layered and tactile. I love layers of patterns and texture.
Working with good people with great brands that value great design that flows seamlessly from their branding, to website and in their commercial space; whether that’s a beauty salon or an office space.
Listen and learn from the client.
A humble home office - had working for myself been on my radar, it would certainly offer more space and natural light!
Having systems to manage my work, being organised and never leaving anything til last minute.
Spending time with friends and family.
Absolutely - having an online community has meant that 95% of my projects are from word of mouth. The most important thing is over delivering and having happy clients.
Being able to work for myself successfully over the last 2.5 years is a huge pinch me moment. It was always my dream, but I didn’t think it would be possible for another 10 years. I’m a big believer that everything happens for a reason and to always trust the timing of your life!
I’m so honoured to be considered by my tutor, Vicki. Having people that believe in what you do is so important, especially when they are people who have walked the path before you.
It’s great to be acknowledged for any award, and I think it presents many opportunities to continue to specialise in the field of commercial interiors as my business grows. Being able to show prospective clients your involvement outside of project work is invaluable and lends itself to being a part of a larger community.
I have focussed on a real-life project, of a Gin Distillery for a long-term client of mine, That Spirited Lot. The Cellar Door space required a revamp to feel more inviting, sustainable and accessible. The client, JP, was looking for a space that feels like it’s giving you a hug. With that description and the existing materials and wall mural in play (illustrated by fellow designer Paige Nicholson), I developed a tactile experience that layers subway tiles, scalloped laminate, pre-loved furniture, recycled timber tops, greenery and brass. The Gin brand is known for it’s artful illustrated packaging inspired by unique flavours and travels of the founders, and I feel this space really transports the customer to another world.
