Common Student Questions

Is learning self-paced or real-time? Will online learning fit into my busy schedule?

At The Interior Design Institute, our course is self-paced. Once you’re enrolled, you can access the course materials and assignments at any time and progress through the program at your leisure. Depending on your course, you will be allocated between 12 and 18 months to complete your studies, allowing you to effectively balance your course work with other commitments.

How long does it take to complete an online course or degree?

The duration of an online course at The Interior Design Institute varies based on the program and the amount of time you’re able to dedicate to studying. Typically, students are able to complete their courses within a few months. However, the self-paced nature of our online learning allows you to progress at your own speed, ensuring a flexible and personalised learning experience.

Can I interact with instructors and other students in online learning?

Absolutely! Our course fosters interaction and collaboration through virtual classrooms, discussion forums, project-based assignments, and online workshops.

Are online degrees or certifications recognised by employers?

Yes, online certifications, such as those offered by The Interior Design Institute, are recognised by many employers in the industry. While The Interior Design Institute does not offer a degree program, our online certifications provide valuable knowledge and skills that are highly relevant to the field of interior design. What equipment or technology do I need for online learning?

To participate in online learning at The Interior Design Institute, you’ll need a reliable internet connection, a computer or laptop, and basic software applications such as a word processor and web browser.

Do I have to have a background in interior design?

No. The courses are designed to allow for students who have had little or no experience in interior design.

What if I need more time?

If you need more time, you can purchase one of our affordable extensions. We currently offer 3, 6 and 12 month extensions. Alternatively, you can purchase an Advanced Module, which will come with a 6 month extension.

Does the course include the Advanced Modules?

No. When you purchase our course, the Advanced Modules will not be included. Our Advanced Modules are short courses and are optional for those who wish to further their studies. They will be available to purchase for students who are enrolled in our course and have completed the first two modules. They are comprised of one module and one assignment and you are mentored by a specialist in the topic selected.

Can I purchase the Advanced Modules as a stand-alone course?

No. Unfortunately, we do not offer our Advanced Modules to the public. Only students enrolled in our course can purchase them.

Do you need a degree to be an interior designer?

No, a formal degree is not always necessary to pursue a successful career as an interior designer. While formal education can offer valuable knowledge and skills, many accomplished interior designers have honed their expertise through alternative paths. The Interior Design Institute offers an excellent opportunity for potential students interested in the field. Our online courses provide a comprehensive curriculum that covers various aspects of interior design. Whether you're a working professional, a stay-at-home parent, or someone looking for a career change, our courses are designed to offer flexibility and a rewarding learning experience. Even without a degree, you can acquire practical skills, build a portfolio, and gain insights from experienced instructors.

Do you mail any course notes or materials out?

No, all course materials are provided digitally. As soon as you join The Interior Design Institute, you will gain access to our online student site. From there, you can download the course materials as you progress through each module. The modules are provided in PDF format, allowing you to keep them for future reference and print them if desired. We are committed to providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly learning experience.

Does the course include Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) software?

The course does not include any CAD software. We do, however, teach AutoCAD and SketchUp through our Advanced Modules.

Do you offer workshops?

The Interior Design Institute is proud to offer online workshops on a variety of different topics related to interior design theory and the interior design industry. We are constantly adding new workshops that students can purchase for a small fee. These workshops are hosted on Zoom by interior design industry professionals from both our institute, as well as guest lecturers. Each session comes with a downloadable presentation booklet, and those who miss out on the live session can refer to the recording.

What topics are covered in your workshops?

The Interior Design Institute’s online workshops cover a range of design topics and feature different expert hosts. These workshops provide a unique opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and industry leaders and further your interior design knowledge and skillset. Some of our past online workshops have covered topics such as biophilic design, trends and visual communication, sourcing art for interiors, and even valuable skills to market yourself, such as our workshop on how to build an Instagram presence and how to launch and grow your interior design business.

Interior design is a diverse field with various career options. With a certification from The Interior Design Institute, your career options are even more vast. You can become a general interior designer that works on residential and commercial projects to create functional and aesthetically pleasing interior spaces, collaborate with clients to understand their needs, select furnishings and decor, create layouts, and manage projects from start to finish. You can also specialise in certain areas of interior design, such as a Commercial interior designer, who designs spaces for businesses and organisations, such as offices, restaurants, hotels, and retail stores.
