Get to Know Khamille

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into interior design?

I began working as a CAD operator and Space Planner for a General Contractor in 2004.

What inspired you to become an interior design tutor?

Interior Design was a natural skill and a passionate hobby.

What are some essential skills or qualities that every interior designer should possess?

Understand scale and proportion, colour, budgets, and schedules, and they should be able to listen to and translate thoughts and ideas. Time management is everything!!

What are some favourite projects you have worked on?

A yoghurt shop, a casual dining restaurant, and a high-end restaurant in Los Angeles.

What is your teaching philosophy when it comes to interior design?

Function follows form. Practical designs make a house efficient, and beautiful designs make that house a home.

What are some key skills and knowledge areas you focus on in your courses?

Space planning (hand drafting and CAD) and understanding fixtures and finishes.

How would you describe your design style and where do you draw inspiration from?

Vintage/Retro and Mid-Century Modern. I am a huge film and television fan and was always drawn to the stage and set design. My love for classic rock and RnB music are also heavy influences on my design process.

What is your favourite part about being a tutor?

Helping others obtain their dreams.

What advice would you give to new students?

Enjoy the learning process and stay inspired. Be kind and patient and give yourself some grace as you learn new skills that may be unexpected or foreign to you because this is a great investment for your future self!

I had a great time… and the Student Support and advice given by my tutor not only assisted me in completing well compiled assignments, but also on how to approach these situations in real life.
