Studying at The Interior Design Institute has been an amazing opportunity for me. Living in regional NSW meant there were no on-site training opportunities and having an established business with my husband and a young family here meant relocating for study was not an option. Being able to study online was a game changer!
The flexibility of the course made it manageable to fit study into my other personal and professional commitments. I stopped and started studying for over 7 years while balancing having a family/growing and running our construction business, and building our own home.
I originally signed up for the certificate course in 2013, which I found fantastic for giving me the skills and knowledge to work on my own project. However, I felt I was still lacking in the ability to deal with clients with someone else's design brief and knowing how to document and communicate ideas/designs.
I was really excited to learn that IDI had become an accredited training provider and that I could RPL to upgrade my qualification to a nationally recognised diploma. I signed up for the RPL Diploma in 2020. I completed that in 7 months (interrupted by having my 3rd baby and everything else that 2020 threw at us!) ups-killing to the diploma really expanded my knowledge and ability to practice interior design as a service and not just a hobby for my own benefit.
Although the path I took to get here was a long way around and probably not the ideal pathway, I'm very thankful that I was able to gain this qualification and confidence to pursue a design career through IDI.

Not having studied for a long time or ever having worked in the creative arts or design fields, and apart from some MS Word and Excel knowledge, I was pretty much computer illiterate, so I had a bit of intrepidation as to how I would get on studying for an interior design qualification.
I needn’t have worried, though! For example, I was concerned that I would not be able to understand or complete the SketchUp component of the course, but the video that accompanied the Diploma Course was excellent. It gave full, clear instructions and took me through all the required steps to complete the set tasks giving me a lot of enjoyment and confidence.
The Diploma Course has a wide range of topics covering many different areas and interests, giving a sound, broad platform in which to either start your own business, decorate your own home or go on to further education.

After 17 months I finished my Interior Design certificate with IDI. I started at the end of maternity leave and fitted in with my children's naps on the weekends while juggling work 5 days a week.
I did this course mostly as a creative outlet with vague plans to start a business at the end. I still feel very green, but I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. I have purchased the Advanced Module on Commercial Design and I look forward to learning a piece of software in the near future.

I've just completed the Diploma of Interior Design with the Interior Design Institute. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in this field. The courseware was easy to understand, and being self-paced, I was able to work it around my other life commitments.
Each module felt logical and flowed into the next one, with the final few bringing all I'd learned together through the assignment, requiring completion of a floor plan, lighting and electrical plan, sample boards, 3D render and the associated fixtures, fittings and equipment schedule.
Having a passion for Interior Design, this course has allowed me to understand the foundations of not only the design aspect but also how to convey my design ideas to a client in a professional manner and allow them to easily see my vision whilst also ensuring all detail required for a smooth ultimate outcome if working with trades is also addressed.
My tutor was also available to answer any questions I might have throughout the course. The couple of times I had more administrative questions, they were responded to amazingly quickly, even on a Sunday (which I didn't expect). The student Facebook group was also fantastic and a great medium to also seek feedback and see examples of other students' work.

For years I’ve been working in the consulting, banking and accounting services industry as a financial analyst. I qualified as an accountant but 10 years into my career and I still don’t feel I’m living my passion!

Upon deciding to pursue this course, I left my Bachelor of Design Arts course midway because it was not the right fit for me at all, a very scary decision. But now, upon completing the 12 modules, I can easily say it was definitely the best decision I've ever made.
My reasoning for leaving my Bachelor's Course was that the support was not there, tutors didn't really care, and I was basically teaching myself from the very few resources they provided for us.
Studying with IDI, my tutor was fantastic, replying to me within hours if I had any questions about what I was reading or what should be included in my assignment, and assignments were marked quickly, letting me get a start on the next one. The resources provided were abundant, and my tutor provided extra readings that I may find helpful or interesting as well as included in the Modules.
This course provided valuable knowledge into all aspects of interior design, not just the designing aspects but the business aspects as well while giving me the opportunity to learn at my own pace, fitting it around a busy lifestyle. The modules are put together in a way that is very easy to understand, making online learning an ideal choice.
Now that I have finished this course, I plan to complete a few of the Advanced Modules to expand my knowledge further and build my own business.

It has always been a dream of mine to be an interior designer. After finishing a design degree at university many years ago, I felt no confidence to work in the industry as I had no practical skills. Fast forward many years, and a baby later, I decided to revisit this dream of mine.
I was so excited when I found out about The Interior Design Institute's Diploma course as it is self-paced and flexible enough for me to fit in the studies & assignments around my life. It is also a very affordable option compared to many other schools offering the exact same course.
I remember feeling so excited after I enrolled in the course; I could feel that my life was nearing a new turning point. I dived into the course and was delighted with the course content in every single module - everything is laid out in a concise and comprehensive manner that is easy to understand and digest.
Working through the assignments provoke me to think deeper into different aspects that will help me when working on real projects. I never felt bored studying any of the modules - even some modules that I assumed will be bland turned out to be so interesting that they motivated me to work on and finish the assignments so that I could move on to the next module. I got more and more excited nearing the last few modules as everything seemed to become clearer, and I felt increasingly confident that I could help clients to create a home that they would love.

I enrolled in the IDI course of Interior Design to become more informed about Interior Design with the aim of renovating and redesigning my own home. By doing this course I have certainly become more informed and now look upon Interior Design as a hobby and a creative outlet.
I found the modules to be interesting and informative as well as a source of information that I refer back to time and again. The earlier modules on the history of Architecture and Design had me driving around the suburbs of Haberfield, Burwood and Paddington in Sydney looking at Federation and Victorian Architecture. Later modules on colour, fabric and textiles had me gaining a new appreciation for these things and now I'm the one who won't walk out of the homeware store.
The assignments were challenging to say the least as well as rewarding. I felt a sense of great satisfaction completing the assignments as I got to use my creative side, which had been poorly neglected for many years.
My tutor was a great source of information and provided me with direction (without giving me the answers) when I needed guidance.
Through telling my friends and family about the course and how much I have enjoyed doing it I have found myself with a small project to work on (separate to my own renovation). This is not something I had intended but I am excited to be putting into practice what I have learned.
I would recommend the IDI course to anyone who is interested in interior design, whether it be as a hobby or prospective career.

It was great having immediate access to each module once the previous module was completed. I'm pleased I didn't have access to them all from the very beginning, it would have been all too daunting and I may never have completed the course!
The Student Support Team were fantastic, I never had to wait for an answer to my queries and my Tutor was unbelievable. There is a definite art to be able to teach & encourage whilst not sounding either too nice/fluffy or alternatively being too condescending or critical. I wanted to learn so I would have been disappointed by someone who gave only praise & no constructive feedback. At the same time to be too critical would have been confidence destroying.
As it turned out I actually looked forward to my assignments being marked not only because of the positive feedback I received, but how much I'd learn each time. Each assessment was very specific & so encouraging.
I’ve gained so much confidence along with invaluable knowledge of the fundamentals of the industry, also how to talk the talk & ultimately see my first of many paid projects to fruition.
It’s taken me a year to complete in between everything else & I can’t believe that instead of being elated to be finished I’m strangely disappointed that it’s over.

I have always had a desire to do Interior Design, but have always put it off due to the normal pressures of work and life in general. Over a discussion with friends and family at our annual Christmas dinner, I decided that 2013 was going to be THE year for me to achieve my goal of fulfilling and completing my Interior Design course. I did not have the time to go back to Uni and do four long years of design studying, and after a lot of research on the internet, I decided to opt for The Interior Design Institute.
I asked many questions which they gladly answered before I had made any decision which impressed me. I found their website to be the most informative, attractive and professional so I took the plunge and signed up.
I already had been practicing as a Property Stylist for over a year after, I did a course through a USA based company and love what I do, but I always felt that I was lacking proper Australian qualifications and hence I went ahead and began my course.
I had made up my mind that if I did this course I was going to give it my all, and do the best that I can. I did heaps of research on the internet and approached each assignment as though my life depended on it, as I always believe if you are going to do something, to do it to the best of your capabilities. From assignment 1 right up to assignment 12 I achieved a score of 10/10 for each assignment, 100% for the entire course. I loved the challenge of each assignment and the complete re-design of our own house plan, through to the electrics, colour choice, furniture planning and selection, all was a genius way of introducing students into taking charge and actually doing the work of an Interior Designer.
I LOVED every aspect of the challenge of each assignment, and because I also wanted to do so much more of my own online research to learn even more about the modules I was studying, it has opened a new door for me to view the design world and all the interiors I walk into in a totally different light. I am now able to read the designer thoughts and hints as to why he/she did what they did in that particular space.
From the warm, friendly and super-efficient student support team, to my supportive, always-ready-to-help tutor, I sailed through the course knowing I could always, and at any time, get quick assistance with all of my questions and queries. It was a huge confidence booster for me. Plus we could join the Facebook page and chat with students all over the world and here in Australia about questions we may have about each assignment, loved that aspect of the course, what a great idea.
I managed to complete the course in fewer than 4 months, and very proud that I have my framed certificate.

I would definitely recommend anybody who is considering a course in Interior Design to sign up today, I loved every minute of the course!

It is with pleasure I recommend this course to anyone wanting to join the design industry. I learnt more than I thought I would and It was very enjoyable. It did stretch me at times, for which I am also grateful.
I found myself completely immersed in each module and I enjoyed the practical content. I felt very supported by my tutor, Wendi, and the student support team as well.

After deciding to change my career and focus on my passion for interiors, I knew that despite hands-on experience in the industry, I wanted to be well rounded and challenge myself to complete a Certificate that would push me and ensure that I learnt all aspects of this industry.
IDI provided a fantastic platform to do this. I was able to work at my own pace and had my tutor's support whenever I was unsure or needed further clarification. The modules were engaging and challenging and allowed me to better my skills and knowledge.
My business has grown since I completed the course. I have more confidence in my skills and abilities and have learnt not just the ins and outs of design but also of running a business in this field.
I highly recommend the course to anyone who has an interest in interiors and loves the flexibility of working from home at your own pace.
